Our Commitment

OptionsMath is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people of all abilities. We strive to continually improve the user experience for everyone and apply the relevant accessibility standards to make our calculators and content usable by the widest possible audience.

Conformance Standard

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities, including those with visual, auditory, motor, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities.

Accessibility Features

We have implemented the following accessibility features across the Site:

  • Semantic HTML: Proper use of headings, landmarks, lists, and form labels to support screen readers and assistive technologies.
  • Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements (buttons, dropdowns, links) are fully operable via keyboard with visible focus indicators.
  • Skip to content link: The first element reachable by keyboard on every page is a "Skip to content" link. It is hidden until focused, and activating it moves past the navigation straight to the main content.
  • Color contrast: We design to the WCAG AA contrast minimums — 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Text placed on tinted surfaces, such as solution boxes and callouts, uses a darkened text color chosen to clear that threshold rather than the lighter muted color used on plain backgrounds.
  • Screen reader support: Calculator results sit in an aria-live region, so a recalculated answer is announced without moving focus. Loading a worked example announces a status message confirming which example was loaded.
  • Mathematical formulas: Formulas are prerendered as static SVG images and served as ordinary image files. Nothing is typeset in the browser at runtime. Formula images are hidden from assistive technology, and where a formula has a plain-English description, screen readers announce that description in the image’s place, so the formula is read as a sentence instead of as an unlabeled graphic. This replaced an earlier runtime math renderer whose output was interpreted inconsistently across screen readers.
  • Responsive design: The Site is usable across screen sizes from mobile devices to large desktop monitors.
  • Dark mode: A dark color scheme is applied automatically when your operating system or browser asks for one, to reduce eye strain and improve readability in low-light environments.
  • Navigation: Site navigation is a bar at the top of every page, rendered as a semantic <nav> element with the accessible label "Primary". On small screens the menu opens as a labeled dialog that keeps keyboard focus inside it while open and closes with the Esc key. The footer provides a second labeled navigation region.

Known Limitations

While we strive for full accessibility, some limitations may exist:

  • Some formula images may not yet have a plain-English description. Where a description is missing, the image is hidden from assistive technology and is not announced at all, so a screen reader user receives the surrounding explanation but not the formula itself. We are adding descriptions to the formulas that still lack one, and we welcome reports of any you encounter.
  • Third-party content, including advertisements served by Google AdSense, may not fully conform to WCAG 2.1 AA standards. We do not control the accessibility of third-party ad content.
